Upon Sharing a Master File of the Project the various Roles can be split out as stems or in a multitrack file for broadcast delivery or other distribution needs. A Role (or Sub-Role) gets assigned to clips to identify what it is (for example Video, Titles, Dialogue, Effects, Music). Introduced in version 10.0.1, Roles can be assigned to clips as an alternate way of creating organizational functionality.
Roles: In order to separate and organize different audio types on the magnetic timeline, editors can designate what "role' each clip plays. The magnetic connections are also user-definable. By default, clips move around each other “magnetically” filling in any gaps and avoiding Clip Collisions by automatically bumping clips out of the way vertically. Magnetic Timeline: Inventing an alternative to track-based timelines found in traditional NLEs, Final Cut's Magnetic Timeline uses Clip Connections to keep Connected Clips and Secondary Storylines in sync with clips located on the Primary Storyline. Keyword Ranges, Favorite and Rejected Ranges, and Smart Collections allow for faster sorting of a large number of clips. You can shorten or extend a range selection by dragging either side of it. If you only want to use a part of the song, select a range in the waveform at the top of the browser so the range has a yellow border, then drag the range to the timeline. The song won’t move if you move any video clips in the timeline.
For background or theme music for your movie, drag songs to the music well, indicated by the musical note icon at the bottom of the timeline. If you move the video clip, the attached song will move with the video clip. To attach a song or sound effects to a specific video clip, drag it under the video clip so a bar connecting the clips appears. When you’ve found the song you like, drag it from the media browser to the timeline:. You can also select a song, click in the waveform at the top of the media browser, then press the Spacebar to preview. To preview a song, click the play button next to each song. If you can't find a particular song, learn more about why it might not be available. With your project open, click Audio at the top of the window, then click Music in the Libraries list, then browse selections. You can use the media browser in iMovie to add songs that you’ve downloaded to the music library on your Mac, as well as songs and other audio files that you've added to your music library. For example, if you want to change the mood of the music over the course of your movie, you can shorten the first song in the timeline, then place a different song after the first song. You can also use more than one song in a project. You can change the length the song like you would any other clip. iMovie automatically places the song at the beginning of the project and automatically fits it to the length of the project. To add the song to your project, tap the Add Audio button next to a song. If a song is dimmed, locate the song in the Music app, then tap the Download button for the song to download it to your device.
Tap Audio, tap My Music, then tap a category to browse songs. With your project open in the iMovie timeline, tap the Add Media button. You can add songs from your music library that you’ve downloaded to the Music app on your device, as well as songs and other audio files that have been synced to your device using the Music app on your Mac.
